The Big Bazoohley

I illustrated the Big Bazoohley in 1995 when I was living in New York city. I met with John Macrae at Henry Holt when he was looking for someone to illustrate a book by Peter Carey. When we discussed the illustrations, John asked for pictures with room for imagination. At that same time I was also doing work for the New Yorker, and I used the same black and white wash for a couple of those illustrations. The pictures suggest Victorian details in the woodwork, chandeliers and oriental rugs to create grandeur. The mood lights and shadowy people add the drama and mystery. I was loving Chas Addams back then.
